Task activity

Set up a Task so learners do something real, mark it done and share a post-it, then bring it back to the group to discuss.

Written by Cody Iddings

A Task gets learners to go and do something real, like trying out a new tool or skill, and mark it done on their phone. They can also share a post-it about how it went. The group canvas shows who has finished as it happens.

Tip: Follow a Task with a group discussion, so learners can talk about what they tried and learn from each other's attempts.

Note: If you're a Creator customer, you can add Task responses to your follow-up emails through your email template.

How to add a Task activity

  1. In the section you want, click Add content > View all activities…, and then choose Task.

  2. On the group canvas, write the task: what learners should do, and any links they'll need. You can use headings, bullet points and links.

  3. Under Task on participant device, write a shorter version for learners' phones. If you'd rather show them the same text as the group canvas, turn on Synced with group canvas.

  4. In the options panel, set Time allocated. It starts at 3:00, and 2 to 5 minutes suits most tasks. If you can't see the options panel, click Show options panel.

  5. Optional: To collect reflections, under More settings, select Include post-it. Learners then write a post-it before they can finish. To tell them what to write, use the Post-it instructions field on the canvas. If you leave it empty, they see "Add a note to this task".

The Task activity in the editor, with Include post-it highlighted in the settings panel.
  6. Optional: To add an expert tip, which is a short audio clip from your media library, click Choose audio tip on the canvas. Then give the tip a title.

When to use the Task activity

  • Action-based learning: when you want learners to do something, such as "Open the settings menu and find the accessibility options".

  • Skill practice: straight after a video or slideshow introduces a skill, have learners try it.

  • Reflection moments: use a post-it to capture what learners noticed after watching a video or completing a reading.

  • Accountability checkpoints: confirm learners have completed pre-work or preparation steps.

  • Group progress tracking: see who has completed a task in real time on the group canvas.

Learner experience

  1. Learners see the task on their phone.

  2. They go and do it.

  3. When they've done it, they tap Mark task complete, the round button on their screen.

  4. If a post-it is required, they write it in the Share your thoughts... box.

  5. When they've marked the task complete, and written the post-it if one is required, they tap All done!

  6. If they can't complete the task, they can tap Skip.

Group canvas display

The group screen during a Task: eight learners in a circle, five marked complete and three still faded.

During the activity: learner avatars appear in a circle, or in a grid when there are more than 12, each in their assigned color. Finished learners show at full brightness with a check badge, and the rest appear faded. A progress bar fills as learners finish.

When time's up, or everyone has finished (with post-its on): submitted post-its appear as cards, each in the learner's color with their avatar in the corner.

Reporting

The Task activity captures:

  • Completion status (completed or skipped) for each learner

  • Post-its, if Include post-it was on

  • Learner identity (name, avatar, color) associated with each response

Similar activities

  • Post-its: for open-ended text submissions (supports anonymous mode)

  • Note: for a personal commitment, emailed to each learner afterwards

  • Reflection: for private thinking before the group shares or discusses

  • Quiz: for testing knowledge with right and wrong answers

  • Poll: for gathering opinions with predefined choices

FAQ

Can learners edit their post-it after submitting?

Yes, learners can edit their submitted post-it while the activity is still running.

What happens if a learner skips the task?

Their response is recorded as not completed. They appear faded on the group canvas and won't have a post-it displayed.

Is the Task activity anonymous?

No. The Task activity shows learner avatars and colors on the group canvas, and the host can see who completed the task and who wrote each post-it. If you need anonymous responses, use the Post-it activity with anonymous mode on.

Can I collect Task responses by email?

Yes, Task responses can be included in follow-up emails if you add them to your post-experience email template. Each learner's email then shows their completion status and any post-it they submitted. Group emails show who completed the task (with their post-its) and who didn't, with learners identified by their assigned colors.

Can I see who completed the task?

Yes. On the group canvas, finished learners show a check badge next to their avatar, and their post-its (if on) appear as cards in their color.
