In a Scales activity, learners rate one or more statements on a scale, anonymously. For each statement, the group canvas shows the group's average and how the ratings are spread, which makes it a safe way to compare views and start a meaningful discussion.
Tip: Follow Scales with a discussion about why the ratings are spread the way they are.
How to add a Scales activity
In the section you want, click Add content > View all activities…, and then choose Scales.
On the group canvas, add a headline and description to prompt the group. We also recommend adding an Audio introduction in the options panel. It plays at the start of the activity.
Under Participant device, write each statement learners rate on their phone. To add another, click the plus button. You can add up to 99.
Under each statement, change the labels at each end of the scale to suit it. The scale runs from 1 to 10 unless you change it.
Optional: To show shorter or different text on the group canvas, turn off Synced with group canvas, and then edit the canvas text.
Optional: In the options panel, under Background Music, choose the music that plays while learners rate.
Optional: To add an expert tip, which is a short audio clip that gives learners an extra prompt, click Choose audio tip.
When to use the Scales activity
To find out, anonymously, where the group stands on a question.
To show the spread of ratings and highlight the range of opinions in the group.
To use the average to see how closely the group agrees.
Reporting
The report shows each rating as a number.
