Makeshapes offers automatic backups and manual snapshots to ensure data safety and easy rollback to previous versions.

Undo/Redo

While editing an experience, you can undo and redo changes within the current session:

  • Undo: Command (⌘) + Z (Mac) or Control + Z (Windows)

  • Redo: Shift + Command (⌘) + Z (Mac) or Shift + Control + Z (Windows)

Note: The undo/redo history is reset when you navigate away from the page or refresh it.

Backups

Makeshapes automatically saves your work every few seconds as you make changes. In addition to these frequent automatic saves, the system also creates more formal backups. You can also create your own named backups at any time.

Automatic backups

  • Automatic backups are created roughly every 60 changes or whenever you navigate away from an experience.

  • A new automatic backup will not be created if it is identical to the previous backup.

  • A Published backup automatically gets created when you or a team member publishes an experience.

Named backups

You can create a backup at any time by pressing ⌘+S (Ctrl+S on Windows) while editing. You can add a name and description to these backups.

Restore a backup

To access and restore backups, click the arrow in the top right corner next to the undo button and select "Version history." You can then scroll through or filter the list to find the desired version.

Backup retention policy

  • All named and published backups are saved for the duration of your contract.

  • Automatic backups are kept for one month. After 31 days, only the latest automatic backup per day is retained.

Version history

The version history page displays the latest automatic, published, and named backups. It initially loads the most recent 10 backups. Click Load more backups to see older backups. Within the Version history, the three dots on the right of each version allow you to:

  • Restore: Restore the experience to a specific version.

  • Duplicate: Create a new experience based on a specific version.

Filtering backups

The Version history page allows you to filter backups to easily find what you're looking for. The available filters are:

  • All versions: Shows all automatic, published, and named backups .

  • Published: Shows backups created when you or a teammate published the experience.

  • Named backups: Shows manual backups you created and named.

  • Auto-backups: Shows automatic backups created by the system.

  • Restored: Filters by any backups that have been restored.

FAQ

Can I restore a previous version of my experience?

Yes, you can restore to any previous backup or snapshot by selecting it in the "Version history" and clicking "Restore."

Why am I seeing so many automatic backups?

Automatic backups are created roughly every 60 changes, which typically equates to 20-30 minutes of continuous work. They are also triggered whenever you navigate away from an experience.

These frequent backups ensure that your work is protected in case of unexpected errors or interruptions. To help manage these backups, they are grouped in the Version history page. After 31 days, only one automatic backup per day is retained to optimize storage. Other types of backups are kept for the length of your contract.

What is the difference between an automatic backup and a named backup?

Automatic backups are created by the system, while named backups are manually created by you. Named backups allow you to add a name and description for easier identification.

Can I create a new experience from a previous backup?

Yes, you can duplicate any previous backup or snapshot by selecting it in the Version history and clicking Create new experience from this version.
